Local students experience forestry thanks to community support

Monday, May 13, 2013

The Sierra Cascade Logging Conference invited local students to a logging demonstration on May 8 and 9. The students were given an overview of the history of logging and were able to observe the complete operation of a mechanical logging operation from falling trees to loading logging trucks.

The conference was hosted by Sierra Pacific Industries and Creekside Logging. Logging Manager Jim Henson and Contract Logging Supervisor Al Nelson represented Roseburg at the event. The event was funded by approximately $6,000 of proceeds raised at the Sierra Cascade Logging Conference dinner auction. The funds are used in large part to bus the students to the demonstration.

The 64th annual Sierra Cascade Logging Conference was held Feb. 7-9 at the Shasta District Fairgrounds in Anderson. According to the Sierra Cascade website, the conference is held to enable manufacturers and dealers to display and demonstrate equipment, tools and supplies relating to forest management and construction. It also states that the mission of the conference is to create programs for schools to educate the students on safe and sustainable forest practices. The Education Auction, held on Friday at the conference, is one of the biggest fundraisers for the organization and is what funded the demonstration for the students.
