The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe
The Ritz-Carlton rests upon a mountainside overlooking the North Shore of Lake Tahoe. The five-diamond, full service resort development boasts 170 guest rooms, 23 private residences, a signature restaurant, a 17-thousand square foot spa and fitness center, two ballrooms and an executive boardroom. Completed with a budget of $227 million, the resort is 417,000 square feet.
Challenge: The project team of The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe wanted to gain LEED certification for the finished building. This would be a challenge for any upscale resort offering the premiere guest services of The Ritz-Carlton. Several features were used to achieve this goal, including choosing a location which earned the LEED Sustainable Sites credit while offering a breathtaking view to the resort guests. Large expanses of insulated glass maximized available sunlight while maintaining a comfortable indoor climate. But to be certified, LEED points needed to be earned in Materials & Resources.
Solution: Among the sustainable materials chosen, Roseburg’s SkyBlend particleboard was used for casework backing throughout the resort. SkyBlend is ECC certified to contain pre-consumer recycled wood fiber, and contributed to The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe earning four points in Materials & Resources for recycled content and regionally-sourced materials.
Results: Construction on The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe was completed in December 2009. The building was awarded LEED certification one year later, in December 2010.
