Elementary school students take part in annual tree planting events

We like to say that every day is Earth Day for us; as landowners and responsible stewards of our working forests, we work hard to make sure we have a reliable and healthy crop of trees to be turned into lumber, plywood, and more.

A crucial part of that process is replanting after harvest, and every year, Roseburg plants millions of new trees across our forestlands in North America.

Roseburg’s forestry team, along with Umpqua Community College Forestry Club and Communities for Healthy Forests, recently held some tree planting events with local elementary schools as part of an annual program to get fifth graders out into the woods to learn about forestry and growing healthy trees.

This year, the schools involved in the event were Winchester Elementary School, Fir Grove Elementary School from the Roseburg area and Lower Umpqua School (near Reedsport).

The students, working in groups of three and assisted by volunteers, got their hands dirty by planting real Douglas-fir trees, and at the Dillard-area event with Winchester and Fir Grove elementary schools, the students planted upwards of 800 trees in total.
